"Great, but new buyers need more info" 2009-11-19
By Kammi (In my own little world)
Quite honestly, there are much better reviews out there than I can write myself, but I believe that anyone buying this version of the Sony Reader (500) needs more information. As of November 2009, Sony has issued an email to current 500 Reader owners to let them know they are updating the 500's firmware to be able to use a different format of e book and it will no longer work if it is not updated. This is not a simple plug in and download it yourself issue, you need to mail your reader into them to have them install this update. They say it will take 14 days to get your reader back, I know if I was buying my reader at this time, and found out after the fact that I had to immediately ship it back to Sony for an update for two weeks I'd be ticked. This is not to say you shouldn't buy one, only know that if you buy this version, their first generation of readers, you will need to send it in to them. They give you a prepaid shipping label for you to ship it to them, so there is no shipping costs to you and they do the update free and ship it back, you pay nothing extra except for your shipping and packing materials.

As for the reader sans update, I have no problems with it, I can easily carry multiple books, the battery lasts an amazingly long time, the pages are easy to read and font size is very easily adjusted. I hope if you buy a reader, no matter the version, that you will enjoy it as much as I have.

"Really enjoy the product" 2009-08-17
By Howard W. Meister (Laguna Beach, CA United States)
I haven't taken the "real" time to compare to the Kindle but I must say I like using this product a LOT more than I had expected.

Moving forward I could easily see myself not buying physical books again.

"Sony Portable Book Reader" 2009-04-08
By Richard G. Sturdevant
Did not like the product. First it only works with Microsoft software, not Apple. The downloading of books from a website was confusing and we were never successful in downloading books.

We returned product and bought a Kindle 2. Much better and easier to use.

"Sony = JUNK" 2009-04-03
By Joel Medina (Wash DC)
NOOOOOO Don't get the Sony model!! It is JUNK!! I had one for 3 months and it broke twice!! First time Bestbuy replaced it but second time it was after the 30 day return policy (yes it broke in 3 weeks) and the second time it broke SONY DID NOT WANNA FIX IT SAYING I BROKE THE SCREEN!!!! I DID not break the screen the SCREEN is fragile and the frame for the Sony reader is WEAK and FLIMSY! DEFINITELY a manufacturers screw up. So i filled a complaint with the BBB becuase sony wanted to charge me 250 dollars to fix a 300 dollar device. I told sony to go take a long walk off a short pier and that i'd never buy another sony product EVER again.

I have a Kindle now and a year later NO PROBLEMS!! Same manufacterer for the screen FYI just a better frame that can handle the abuse. And I droped my kindle once!

SONY READER=JUNK!!

I have been waiting to purchase the ebook since it came out. I finally freed up some cash and bought it used. It is great! Easy to use and convenient. I do miss the smell of a paperback and the feel of a book a little, but this will definitely do!!!For an avid reader...this is a must have!

"Great Product" 2010-03-20
By M. K. Dovers
I've had it a whole month and can't find anything bad about it. It was my birthday present to myself. The screen is very clear and easy to see. I have the Kindle app on my iPod but this is so much nicer to read books on. I really really love it.

"I can't be without my Kindle!!!!" 2010-03-20
By I. Katsamanis (New York, NY)
I have to say... Kindle has to be my favorite gadget. My fiancee gave it to me for x-mas, and I haven't been able to put it down. Easy to read, easy to save, easy to download, good priced books. I can't say enough about how much I love my Kindle. The only time I don't have it in my purse is when my fiancee sneaks it out to read some of the books I've downloaded. now he's hooked on it himself and downloads books as well. I think eventually he will need his own. :)

If you've been undecided on what to get, I will tell you my honey does a ton of research and comparisons. He told me after he gave me the Kindle that he was undecided between the Nook and the Kindle. The deciding factor was based on ease of use, clarity of screen, flexibilty of downloads, price of books, and compatibility.

Don't take my word for it though.... read all 13K+++ reviews about the Kindle. I'm sure most will be very positive!!!!!! :)

I.K.

"WOW!" 2010-03-20
By J. Martin (traveling the world)
I am a skeptic. I have been eying the Kindles now for a year, and finally purchased one. It is way better than I expected. We travel a lot internationally. Downloading to the computer via USB was easy. Transferring books between my Kindle pc was a snap. I love the screen! And I love the size. It is easy to hold over long periods of time especially with it in a soft case. Even my husband is rethinking and wants one now. He rarely uses e-gadgets! We tried a magazine, and love not having to thumb through all the ads! Amazon got it right with this way cool device. By the way, the text to speech is awesome! The only thing I would like to see is a little digital time display so I don't too "lost in the book" and forget the time! The screen protectors and skins are a great idea to protect it, and they were easy to apply. It is amazing how many classics are available at no charge if you need to budget the ole' reading appetite!

"Lovin' My Kindle" 2010-03-20
By Marria Hall
My husband gave me my Kindle for Christmas. I finally had found a piece of Electronics that I got excited about. I am a reader & my closets are full. It is nice to have my favorite books at my disposal without carrying books around. It is like having a best friend with you all the time, and they do not talk back to you.Smile!! I have not had ANY problems with my kindle & I use it all the time. I have the Kindle 2, the updated version. The electronic books are cheaper, I do not have to go to the store, and it only takes a minute to receive them. I would recommend the kindle experience to anyone, especially people who have a passion for reading.

"Kindle and Amazon - A great product and great service" 2010-03-20
By AliciaAnn11
I love my kindle. My husband purchased the Kindle DX for me for our anniversary. It was the best thing he's ever bought for me. I've taken it just about everywhere with me. I read when I'm working out, it reads to me when I drive. LOVE IT. However, I had a problem with the Kindle DX and I contacted Amazon.com. The service was outstanding and they helped me resolve my problems. Between the Kindle and Amazon's service, there couldn't be a better combination.

"Love it!!!" 2010-03-19
By R. Trujillo (Nevada)
My husband purchased the Kindle DX Wireless Reading Device for my birthday this year. I turned 56 and my eyesight is not what it used to be so I was not enjoying reading books as I've always done in the past. Since receiving my Kindle, I'm back to reading every chance I get. I love the convenience of downloading a book in less than 30 seconds and being able to hold the Kindle with one hand comfortably and also the setting of the bigger font. It has been the best present I've ever received. I love it and cannot say enough good things about it.

"books cost too much, great tool" 2010-03-19
By Christopher M. Schmid (Florida, USA)
i would love to use this book for school but the price of USED text books cost less than the Kindle discount price. what is worse is that i can sell the used text book when i am done reading it which makes the cost difference even greater.

"I don't go anywhere without it" 2010-03-19
By Paulo Bandeira
Exactly what I was looking for. After researching several products I opted for Kindle and I'm sure I made the right choice. Now I can take all my books with me everywhere I go.

"Hardware good downloads not" 2010-03-19
By David Lloyd (Halifax, West Yorlshire)
Firstly the good bit - The kindle is very good although you'll need a US main adaptor to charge it from the mains (I thought it was a legal requirement for electrical items to be fitted with a UK 3 pin plug here - But I guess Amazon get round this by directing you to the US site to buy it - Sneeky!)

Now the bad bits - I was on holiday in Egypt recently so decided to download a UK newspaper. What a load of rubbish! One picture on page one and thats your lot! The rest is one huge wad of text bearing no resemblance to the actual newspaper and this was the case for all the UK papers. I also wanted to download probably one of the most popular series of books for sale at the moment - One of the Harry Potter books but amazingly they're not available! The kindle is also supposed to let you browse certain sites (well they'relisted on the menu) These include Amazon, CNN and the BBC but I've had no success as yet.

So all in all a good product mared by lousy support - My opinion - Buy an Ipad when it's released - wish I'd waited!
